Isko Moreno Promises Swift Action on Manila's Garbage and Security Issues
Manila's incoming mayor, Isko Moreno, has pledged to tackle the city's long-standing garbage and security problems as a top priority upon assuming office. In an exclusive interview with Arnold Clavio on GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita, Moreno outlined his initial plans, emphasizing a swift and decisive response to these critical concerns.
“These are the things that people are complaining about, so we need to address them immediately,” Moreno stated. He acknowledged the frustration of Manilans regarding the persistent issues of overflowing garbage and rising crime rates, promising a new approach to both challenges.
Garbage Management: A Comprehensive Overhaul
Moreno’s plan for garbage management involves a comprehensive overhaul of the current system. He highlighted the need for increased efficiency in waste collection, improved sorting and recycling programs, and stricter enforcement of ordinances against illegal dumping. He also plans to explore partnerships with private companies and NGOs to implement innovative waste management solutions. “We need to be smarter about how we handle our waste. We can’t just keep piling it up,” he explained. Moreno specifically mentioned exploring the possibility of converting waste into energy, a move that could significantly reduce the city's environmental impact and generate revenue.
Security Concerns: Strengthening Presence and Community Partnerships
Regarding security, Moreno aims to strengthen the presence of law enforcement in high-crime areas and improve coordination between the Manila Police Department and barangay officials. He stressed the importance of community involvement in crime prevention, encouraging residents to report suspicious activities and participate in neighborhood watch programs. “We can't do this alone. We need the help of every Manilan,” he said.
Moreno also indicated a review of existing security protocols and a potential increase in the number of police officers deployed throughout the city. He expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Manilans, emphasizing that a secure environment is essential for economic growth and overall quality of life.
Beyond Garbage and Security: A Vision for Manila
While garbage and security are his immediate priorities, Moreno also spoke about his broader vision for Manila – a cleaner, safer, and more livable city for all. He reiterated his commitment to improving public services, promoting education, and creating economic opportunities for Manilans. His focus on these core issues reflects a desire to restore Manila’s reputation as a vibrant and thriving metropolis.
The interview concluded with Moreno expressing his gratitude for the trust placed in him by the people of Manila and his determination to deliver on his promises. He urged Manilans to remain optimistic and to work together to build a better future for their city.
